Next I think we ought to take a look at how God created marriage (looking at Genesis 2, the passage to which Jesus points us in Matthew 19), but before we do that, I thought I’d ask an application question from what we just saw. We see in the Bible that marriage is a representation of the relationship between Christ and the church. If this is so, why, then, do you suppose that God says He hates divorce?
Malachi 2:13-16
Another thing you do: you flood the LORD’s altar with tears. You
weep and wail because He no longer pays attention to your offerings or
accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD is acting as the witness between
you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her,
though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.
Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are His. And why one? Because He was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.
“I hate divorce,” says the LORD God of Israel, “and I hate a man’s covering himself with violence as well as with his garment,” says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.
What do you all think? Why does God hate divorce?

What can I say that hasn’t been said? Why would our faithful, jealous God NOT hate the breaking of a covenant that represents the everlasting Covenant He made with His people?? He is the one who said, “You will be My people and I will be your God.” In essence He says, “You are Mine and I am yours.” He even goes so far as to make man and wife one flesh. He does the joining. Oh, and marriage is three-part including Him (references to the Trinity?). I think it goes deeper–definitely can be said better than that. Lots of thoughts to chew on.”Therefore, be imitators of God as dear children” (Eph 5:1). To forsake those He loves or to break a vow goes against God’s nature. He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.It’s hard for us to understand God hating divorce, or any sin, because we don’t realize His holiness. We don’t give Him the glory and awe due to Him, but instead glorify man.

I think from looking at this passage, especially if we believe the Bible to be true and divinely inspired, that it is obvious that God hates divorce and that He hates it because it is a broken representation of what is supposed to replicate His relationship to us. It is sin, it hurts His beloved, and it in no way glorifies Him; a hard truth but truth nonetheless.
My question in light of that is, if we realize the depth of what it means for God to hate something, as well as His reason for hating it, why then do we persist to accept this pracitce in our lives?
